Trail 451

Anello del Terzona – Pieve di Santo Stefano a Campoli

⚠️ Important notice: The section between Villa Barberino and Montefiridolfi is currently not passable. A marked alternative route is being prepared.

This circular hike lies in the Mercatale area and is particularly attractive for the variety of landscapes it crosses. The route begins in Calzaiolo, near the bridge over the Terzona stream, where parking and public transport are available. It initially follows white gravel roads along the quiet valley of the stream, passing vineyards and wooded areas.

Gradually, the trail climbs away from the valley toward Montefiridolfi and the surrounding hills. As elevation is gained, the views open wide across the Chianti Fiorentino, with oak forests alternating with olive groves and Chianti Classico vineyards. On clear days, the panorama extends northward to the Apennines and even to the Apuan Alps.

A highlight of the route is the visit to the solitary Pieve of Santo Stefano a Campoli, a Romanesque church dating back to around the year 1000, set in a peaceful rural landscape. The trail then continues toward Villa Barberino, a historic Renaissance estate, before descending again through woodland and along ridge tracks.

The return section follows scenic paths through oak forest and open countryside, crossing the Terzona stream before reconnecting with the outward route and finally returning to Calzaiolo.

A long but varied loop combining water landscapes, forests, historic sites, and classic Chianti views.
